Asthma remains a difficult disease to treat and control, with a large portion of the patient population not receiving adequate treatment options. But next-generation therapies are targeting this inflammation by being more targeted, getting at the root of the pathways that play a larger role in the disease. Bob Baltera, chief executive officer of Amira Pharmaceuticals, tells host Bruce Japsen about developments in more targeted therapies.

 

 

 

Bruce JapsenBruce Japsen has been a healthcare business reporter for the Chicago Tribune since May of 1998. Mr. Japsen covers pharmaceutical and device makers, economic issues, managed-care companies, doctor practices and other physician issues. Bob Baltera is chief executive officer is chief executive officer of San Diego-based Amira Pharmaceuticals, a small molecule pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and early development of compounds to treat inflammatory disease. He has nearly two decades of product management experience, including work at biotech giant Amgen Inc., where he held several senior management positions including vice president of corporate and contract manufacturing. A scientist by training, Mr. Baltera has a master's of business administration from the Anderson School at UCLA and earned his bachelor's degree in microbiology and a master's degree in genetics from the Pennsylvania State University.
