As medication costs continue rising, what strategies can help long-term care facilities reduce drug expenditures, while still providing the best quality of care for patients? Fred Wendt, RPh, vice president of pharmacy services for Senior PharmaStrategies in Burleson, Texas, says one of the most significant pharmacy issues in long-term care is the Drug Enforcement Agency's current position on the nursing facility staff as agent of the physician, with regard to controlled substances. How is the role of the consultant pharmacist changing in long-term care? Frederick L. Wendt is vice president of pharmacy services for Senior PharmaStrategies (SPS), which provides clinical programming and cost containment support to over 100 long term care facilities. He has over 25 years' experience in the long term care setting, having worked on the pharmacy provider side, as well as the nursing facility provider side. Mr. Wendt is a 20-year member of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and has served on ASCP's education and PAC/GAC committees. He currently serves on the editorial board for AMDA's publication, Caring for the Ages.
Dr. Eric G. Tangalos is professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic and was chair of primary care internal medicine from 1997 to 2006. He is a past-president of the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) and is a fellow and past governor of the American College of Physicians. He served eight years on the national board of the Alzheimer's Association and has had continuous NIH funding for his work at the Mayo Alzheimer's Disease Center since 1986. Dr. Tangalos has been medical director at Bethany Samaritan Heights nursing home since its doors opened in 1981. He is also vice chair of the AMDA Policy Committee is again delegate to the AMA for AMDA.
